SAN MARCOS, Texas- School shootings are occurring more frequently, and some are proposing that teachers be armed to protect schools. Some disagree stating that there are more cons than pros.

The most recent school shooting took place in Parkland while there were armed guards on campus 17 students still died.

A Gallup survey showed that 63% of teachers were strongly against arming teachers. Although 18% of those teachers said they would agree to arming teachers if they went through the proper training and the district approved it.
Sarah Ferrell, a student majoring in Early Education, said that she is going to become a teacher and that teachers should have guns so that they can protect the kids and not be helpless.

Personally, since I’m going to be a teacher, I feel that guns should be allowed for teachers just because me thinking about it, being a kindergarten teacher, and say something happened and we did have a shooting I would want to have some way to protect my kids in the classroom, and not just be helpless,” said Ferrell.

Julian Salazar, a Geography major at Texas State University, said that he is going to become a teacher and that he wouldn’t feel comfortable with being armed and have to possibly shoot one of his students.

“I believe as someone who’s right now going to school to become a teacher, I don’t, I am not comfortable with the idea with having to be armed, like with the possibility of having to in the event that that would happen to have to shoot one of my own students, that I might know on a personal level,” said Julian Salazar.

Houston Fox 26 news station recently interviewed workers who work at firearm inspection areas. Although there is no specific test just yet for a teacher protecting their children, if one needs to be created the workers are willing to prepare and train those teachers.

Lynell Richter, a Non-traditional student majoring in Public Administration, said that teachers should only have guns if they want to and if they are properly trained.

“I stand on allowing the teachers to have the guns only if they wish too and as long as they are trained on how to properly use them,” said Richter.

There are some places in the U.S. that already allow teachers to carry guns, a GoSanAngelo report states that there are 172 school districts in Texas that allows states to carry guns after the Sandy Hook shooting Christoval became the second district in Texas to use the Guardian Plan.

Josue Blanco, a student majoring in English, was unaware that some schools allowed teachers to carry guns but when he found out about it he agreed and supported the idea.

“I did not know that. I think it’s good. I think that allowing them to protect themselves and also be able to attempt to protect their students is a good idea,” said Josue.

Kelly Gourluck, a graduate student and Welcome Center Specialist, said that teachers are not police officers and their job should be to worry about the students.

Yes. I think it’s a horrible idea because teachers are not police officers or military officers, they’re teachers. They’re not trained to do it and they should be worried about the students than whether their gun is safely stored,” said Gourluck.

A Washington Post report broke down how much the cost of training all teachers in the nation and the cheapest amount is $251 million to arm 718,00 teachers while the more expensive cost more than $1 billion.

E.J. Badu, a 20-year-old business major at Texas State University, said that there should be zero funding that goes into training teachers how to properly handle firearms.

“There should be zero funding for this law. Why would the funding go to that? That’s crazy,” said Badu.

According to Fortune, President Trump is thinking about letting teachers carry concealed firearms because it could prevent mass shootings.
