2018 Study In America Trip Announced

By Haley Peters, hjp27@txstate.edu

SAN MARCOS, Texas—Nicole Hengst, program assistant, announces the travel locations to Mass Communications students for the 2018 Study in America trip.

It all started with an annual Texas state park pass bought by Dale Blasingame. After traveling to the entirety of the parks in one year, he wanted his Mass Communications students to understand the services, resources, and experiences at these areas.

This Study in America trip is fourteen days of travel total, as well as two weeks of preparatory classes before and a week of completion classes after the return to San Marcos.

In 2017, nine students and three staff members traveled together, however, more students selected for the 2018 trip is encouraged.

To be selected for this trip, students must fill out an application and then go through an interview process. This is to avoid potential conflict among such a small group as well as gather people who are interested in homing in on writing and media skills.

Students are invited to attend the interest meeting during Mass Communication Week for the announcement of when applications will be open and when they will be due.

The 2018 Study in America trip locations include:
Caprock Canyon, Sante Fe, Grand Canyon, Zion, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, Palo Duro.

This is farther than the 2017 trip in which the group stayed in Texas and New Mexico.

Students also have a high potential to get their content published by organizations affiliated with the parks as well as local news.

“Content pieces created can help with internships and potential jobs,” said Hengst when inquired on the benefits of going on the trip.

Hengst was very satisfied with the hard work and projects produced by students in the 2017 trip.

“Students were willing to push their boundaries,” Said Hengst of the 2017 student Study in America Trip attendees.

Hengst is excited and confident that the 2018 trip attendees will only push the standards even higher for quality of content produced.
