The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has a little-known program, Study in America, that takes students to state and national parks across the country.
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has a little-known program, Study in America, that takes students to state and national parks across the country.
Nicole Hengst, the program assistant, gave a brief description of the program and provided the planned stops for the summer 2018 semester.
2018 Traveling itinerary:
- Caprock cannon state park (Texas)
- Santa Fe (N.M.)
- Grand Cayon- south rim ( Ariz.)
- Zion National Park (Utah)
- Colorado Messa Verde national park ( Utah)
- Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (Colo.)
- Palo Duro State Park (Texas)
The program provides students the opportunity to earn up to six credits hours in Feature Writing and Digital Media Storytelling.
Participating students spend 14 days traveling to numerous state and national parks while completing class assignments like mini-documentaries and park features along the way.
The program also comes with a chance to be published, after a final presentation at the end of the course. Hengst told the class
"You do your work as you travel and while we’re visiting all these amazing places. And then, you come back and put everything together and present that to Faculty and some special guest that we invite including people from Texas Parks and Wildlife and San Antonio Express-News and any of our other partners that we're working with we always invite them well."

Hengst also discussed that the Study in America program being underneath the Office of Distance and Extended Learning, this means that the program is university-sponsored. University-sponsored programs give students the opportunity to pay for programs like these with financial aid.
