SAN MARCOS, Texas   Texas State University's Study-in-America program is starting to take shape. The program assistant took to the podium Thursday to announce that planning for the 2018 trip is underway. Mass communication majors will get the chance to visit national and state parks as well as earn credit.

Nicole Hengst announced that the program would be visiting four states and six parks over the course of 14 days. Students will get the chance to visit the following:

  • Caprock Canyon State Park
  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Zion National Park
  • Mesa Verde National Park
  • the Great Sand Dunes National Park
  • Palo Duro Canyon National Park
The Study-in-America program gives students an opportunity to earn up to six credit hours for up to two electives. Not only can students who attend travel the country, but they can also save some money as well. This trip gives students an alternative to study abroad.

While on the trip, students will be completing assignments ranging from social media usage to filming mini documentaries. The work that the students complete will be collected and compiled into a presentation that will be presented in front of University faculty, park officials and the San Antonio Express News.

"This program has kind of dual missions. So the first mission is really to get you guys some credit and get you learning in the field," Hengst said. "That other mission is to really encourage other young people to take advantage of the parks and spend more time outside as well."

Hengst said that trip does consist of a lot of time crammed in cars and working with others. The program hopes that experiences like these are willing to push students out of their comfort zones.

"I was very surprised at how much our students were willing to push their boundaries," said Hengst. "everyone helped each other and worked together.

Program Director Dale Blasingame came up with this program idea after visiting all 95 state and national parks in Texas. In 2016 he took a class to one park and now it has evolved into a two week experience.

Students who are interested in joining the program for the 2018 trip can stop by the Study-in America  panel during Mass Comm week or the can visit the program website http://studyintheparks.com .
