Students voice concerns about alternative learning opportunities

SAN MARCOS, Texas— Some Texas State students said alternative learning resources are not accessible enough.

Students feel like there is not enough information about Study Abroad, Study-in-America, or internship opportunities.

Texas State University provides students with the chance to take part in these programs so they can experience learning outside of the classroom.

Some students want to take these opportunities, however, they said they do not know enough about it.

Kathia Avilez, a public relations major, said it would be a good idea to bring more awareness about these opportunities to Texas State.

"I think bringing more awareness. I would even set up a tent in the quad. A lot of people are afraid to ask and they don't know of the resources available. So definitely go out of your way to advertise it," Avilez said.

Some students that have participated in these programs, made suggestions on how Texas State can get more information to other students wanting to take part. Malcolm Thomas, an electronic media major, said Texas State should push more opportunities in the surrounding areas when it comes to internships.

"Maybe Texas State should help the students out more by making the students more aware of the opportunities that are available in Austin and San Antonio. Mainly those areas because those are the closest to Texas State." Thomas Said.

Texas State does provide some information about these programs through fairs and classes, but some students want more. Shanaya Davis, a nursing student, said she wants to get into it but she doesn’t know how.

"I've gotten a couple emails about a meeting to get information about it, but other than that I don't know anything about it,” Davis said. “I want to get into it but I don't know how to start.”

Some students’ main source of information is in class. Daniel Tello, an animal science major, said he thinks professors should talk about it more often.

For some students, the financial help is what they want to be more accessible. Dana Hiser, a fashion merchandising major, said she wanted to know more about the financial aid opportunities.

"If they could make more scholarships and grants available to students," Hiser said.

Overall, students just want to know more about it. Lilly Montemayor, a communication studies student, said she wants to know more about how to get started.

"I feel like there could be more visibility around it, like where to sign up, who to talk too, who runs it like you know, just general information,” Montemayor said.

More information about these programs can be found at The Study Abroad Office or on their website.
